That way, as you remember things you need to bring, you add them to the list. It should be an ongoing process until move-in day, but the extra time allows you to brainstorm all the potential things you will need or that you might forget. In order to make it easier for you, here is your ultimate college apartment checklist of everything you may need in college when you move this fall. </span><br />

After filling up their residences with boxes, USC’s incoming
class of 2013 will have plenty to do. During Welcome Week, the period between
Move-in Day on Aug. 21 and the first day of classes on Aug. 26, the university has
planned an array of events and activities for the newest members of the Trojan
Family and — for the first two days — their families.</div>

This year the university will offer more programming than
ever, including two new signature events. The first, “Taste of SC,” will be
held on Move-in Day from 5 to 7 p.m. Students and their parents can enjoy free
food and see student groups perform in the Ronald Tutor Campus Center and
Student Union as they tour campus offices and learn about student resources.</div>

On Aug. 23, students will recreate the Game Day experience
during “Light Up the Coliseum.” On that evening, the students will meet at
Tommy Trojan at 7:30 p.m. and follow the USC Trojan Marching Band to the Los
Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where they will learn about USC traditions, have a
group photo taken and spell out USC with flashlights. The first 500 students
will also receive free food. The event is scheduled to end at 10 p.m.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Okay, it’s only March.
You may not have had a single thought about what you are doing when the
spring semester finishes up. Or, you may
have already decided to keep the USC academic train rolling through summer
school. </div>

Here’s another thought.
How about trying a summer internship?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
Before you come back to hit the books for fall semester, you
could get some real-world job experience, some excellent networking for after
graduation, and maybe even make some money!

And in a city as large and diverse as <st1:city w:st="on">Los Angeles</st1:city> you MAY find the internship is at
your dream company right here! You can
stay settled in at your Trojan Buildings apartment- all cozy while you dip your
toe into that wide world of the workers.

Come back to Trojan Buildings safe and sound.</b><br />

<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, FreeSans, Garuda, Helvetica, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Spring Break marks one of the biggest periods of binge drinking each year – when young adults from all over the county head south for a week of vacation and partying with friends. For many people, Spring Break can mean social drinking, often to dangerous excess.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, FreeSans, Garuda, Helvetica, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), one in six U.S. adults binge drinks about four times a month, consuming about eight drinks per binge. About 90 percent of the alcohol consumed by youth under the age of 21 in the United States is in the form of binge drinks.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, FreeSans, Garuda, Helvetica, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
There are a few simple strategies that can keep your Spring Break safe and sober. Here are a few tips: </div>
<span style="font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, FreeSans, Garuda, Helvetica, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"></span><br />
<ul><span style="font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, FreeSans, Garuda, Helvetica, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">
<li>Take a trip with non-drinkers – Peer pressure and enabling are big factors when it comes to binge drinking. If you have friends that have demonstrated a history of dangerous behavior, they may not be the best travel companions.</li>
<li><br /></li>
<li><br /></li>
<li>Go on a spa outing or nature hike – Find a vacation option that centers on an activity that is not alcohol related. Busying yourself with a highly relaxing or stimulating activity will leave little time for over-indulgence.</li>
<li><br /></li>
<li><br /></li>
<li>Avoid trips where alcohol is included in the package – Many Spring Break packages are “all inclusive” and do not charge for alcoholic beverages. Avoid taking trips where alcohol is readily available.</li>
<li><br /></li>
<li><br /></li>
<li>Have an exit strategy – Wherever you vacation, chances are you will encounter a tempting situation. Have a plan in place to remove yourself from these situations like excusing yourself to your hotel room, going on a walk or finding a local support group.</li>
<li><br /></li>
<li><br /></li>
<li>Stick to your daily routine – Breaking out of your normal routine can often lead to lapses in judgment. Stick to your daily routine of exercise, diet and any other normal practices as much as possible in order to avoid tempting situations.</li>

<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Administrators said the center’s new features make it more productive. All of the programs that the student health center offers are centralized, with the counseling office moved to the health center. There is also a state-of-the-art call center, which responds to students’ calls more efficiently, as well as three times the number of exam rooms. Additionally, the center also features a student educational resource room. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The health center also has a 24-hour nurse hotline that covers everything from mental health calls to simple scrapes. The center also has a pharmacy on its lower level. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The health center moved from its previous location on 34th Street to 1031 W. 34th St., next to Fluor Tower, because of its larger size.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Many students said they are happy with the new health center because they felt certain aspects of the old health center was inadequate for their needs. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“The only thing that needed improvement was wait time. Even when I made an appointment, it took forever for me to see a doctor,” said Candice Coll, a freshman majoring in psychology.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Melissa Bonner, a freshman majoring in neuroscience, said she has already noticed improvements. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“It was much easier to check in and see my doctor,” Bonner said. “It’s more spacious and it will allow for more patients to come and its much more aesthetically pleasing.”</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The new center is 105,000 square feet and six stories tall, while the old one was two stories tall, built in 1951 and required some services to be housed elsewhere because of a lack of space. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The old location of the student health center will be used to house the </span><a href="http://dailytrojan.com/2012/11/11/university-announces-new-school-of-dance/" style="color: #8f1909; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: initial; vertical-align: baseline;">USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance</a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">, set to open in spring 2014.</span></div>

Thanks to everyone who helped to make our Tenant Appreciation Day such a success! It was so rewarding to be able to give all the Trojan Buildings' Residents a free lunch during such a stressful week-- <i>Exam Week!</i><br />

Many of the Residents sat on the lawn in front of Trojan Terraza and ate their lunch like they were at a picnic. And, of course, In-N-Out Burgers are always delicious. . . <br />

For students balancing classes, work, internships and extracurricular activities, daily eating habits often fall to fast food and pre-packaged entrees.</span></span></h1>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Robyn Kievit, a nurse practitioner and dietician at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Emerson</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">College</st1:placetype></st1:place> and member of the American College<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><span class="klink">Health</span><span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>Association, helps students manage their eating every day and is familiar with the issue of eating healthy for less. Her advice for busy students is to plan meals and snacks around classes and to bring non-perishable foods along during the day if they are unable to go back to their<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><span class="klink">apartment</span><span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>or dorm between classes. “One method may work one day with a hectic work and class schedule while another will work for a different day or weekend day,” Kievit said. “In general, I recommend students try to eat something every three to four hours as that is when our bodies generally become hungry after eating mindfully the last time. Eating regularly keeps us from overeating and undereating.”<o:p></o:p></span></span><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span><div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Asha Kennedy, a 19-year-old dietetics major at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Florida</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">State</st1:placetype> <st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype></st1:place>, believes that an important rule of eating healthy on a limited budget is planning meals in advance. “Making a schedule, even if tentative, for the week will give you an idea of how much time you will need to dedicate to your meals as well as to plan out when and between which classes to prep for your meals,” Kennedy said. “Potluck dinners are a favorite among my friends and I. Someone makes the pasta, someone makes the meat, another person makes the vegetables and someone is in charge of dessert. Or even having one roommate cook one night, and you cook another night are simple ways to ensure having a meal on busy days.”</span></span></div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span><div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Kievit suggested these students stock their kitchen with items that will help them create basic meals, such as:<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">• Salad spinner <br style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;" /> • Aluminum vegetable steamer<br style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;" /> • Medium size saucepan/pot<br style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;" /> • Wooden spoon<br style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;" /> • Medium serrated knife<br style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;" /> • Medium cutting knife<br style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;" /> • Cutting board<br style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;" /> • Spatula<br style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;" /> • Water container with filters<br style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;" /> <br style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;" /> When buying groceries, Kievit said students should make a list and a budget ahead of time, and stick to it. The list should include foods that are multipurpose (especially if they have limited shelf life) such as vegetables that can be used on sandwiches and also in entrees. Buying plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables is also important to keeping a balanced diet. Although non-vegetarians and vegans tend to get enough protein, meats such as chicken are practical for healthy cooking because they can be used in a variety of ways. It’s important to look at the nutrition content and stay away from foods high in saturated and trans fats.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Purchasing store brand items and taking advantage of sales and coupons can also save<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><span class="klink">money</span>, as well as shopping at discount grocers and green markets. Pre-packaged foods are a quick, seemingly inexpensive and often tasty option, but even those that claim to be healthy can be packed with hidden sodium. Kievit offered the following tips when it comes to pre-packaged meals:<o:p></o:p></span></span><br /><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">• Keep calories down to 500 in total<br style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;" /> • Keep fat grams to zero of saturated or trans fats.<br style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;" /> • Keep sodium down to 300-600 mg per serving in frozen or pre-packaged foods.<br style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;" /> • In general, choosing foods with the least amounts of ingredients is best and most pre-packaged foods have a longer list of ingredients.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Eating healthy on a budget may seem like a challenge, but by following these simple rules, Keivet estimated that college students can keep their weekly grocery budget down to about $20-$50. To learn more about healthy eating, students can visit their school’s student health centers and ask for advice specific to their school and the food shopping options around it.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

To all of you coming back for another year and all of you coming to Los Angeles for the first time-- WELCOME!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9110597529292589133.post-58491532795611517012011-07-26T16:11:00.000-07:002011-07-26T16:11:55.608-07:00Get Help Furnishing Your ApartmentWe have just come across a service that may be very useful to our Trojan Buildings' residents. Need to get some furnishings, say from IKEA, but don't have a way to get there all the way across Los Angeles or to bring them back here to Trojan Buildings? Contact Chris, the Trojan Spaces manager, and he will get you in touch with<b> Full Service Furnishing</b>.<br />
<br />
For a small fee, plus the cost of the furniture you choose, they will do the shopping, delivery, and assembly of the furniture you need. All furniture is new. There are two deliveries scheduled for USC students. You must place your order by either August 10th or 20th. Call Chris at (323) 428-1687 for more information.<br />
<br />
Another great way to get the things you need is to take a <b>Zipcar</b>. There are 3 parked in front of Trojan Terraza and USC students get discounted membership! And did we mention that they pay for insurance and gas? It's a terrific value. We placed a link on our Facebook page: <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Trojan-Buildings/180666225287777">http://www.facebook.com/pages/Trojan-Buildings/180666225287777</a> Go check it out!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9110597529292589133.post-59806251388930430342011-06-07T13:59:00.000-07:002011-06-07T13:59:54.415-07:00Summer "To Do" List<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YJSqTEFl_lc/Te6Q5aLVSdI/AAAAAAAAAFk/qyDgRPD7lxc/s1600/Chinese+theatre.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="120" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YJSqTEFl_lc/Te6Q5aLVSdI/AAAAAAAAAFk/qyDgRPD7lxc/s200/Chinese+theatre.jpg" width="200" /></a>Got any time to spare in Los Angeles this summer?
